This page is designed to help Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley members and friends updated about the status of our activities, clubhouses and programs and additional information to help better prepare to respond to the challenges of the COVID-19 coronavirus. We all need to take steps to keep ourselves and each other healthy and to reduce the risk for spread of the virus. Information is changing often, and updates will be made here regularly. You should rely on official sources first and foremost. We will repost some of that information here, in addition to BGCCV status reports and updates.

School Closures Extended to June 19

Riverside County Public Health Officer Dr. Cameron Kaiser extended the closure of the county’s schools to June 19 in response to the current conditions of COVID-19.

“After consultation with the districts and the County Office of Education, I unfortunately believe the safest option is to keep the schools closed through the end of the school year,” said Dr. Cameron Kaiser, Riverside County public health officer. “I know this situation is stressful for schools, students and parents alike, and I appreciate everyone’s understanding during this difficult time.”

All public and private schools, colleges and universities extension are all included in the closure extension until June 19. Individual school districts will have the discretion to determine essential personnel to support critical functions within their districts. To date, more than 1.31 million lunches have been provided by local school districts to students during the school closure order.

We are continuing to serve. Following the state order to stay at home, BGCCV acted quickly and decisively to close all four clubhouses to protect the public’s health. In order to stay connected and continue to support our members during this time of transition, we are working hard to move fundraising, programs, services and support to innovative online platforms.

A message to our sponsors, partners and supporters scheduled to attend the March Grand Auction

Dear Stakeholders,

It has never been more important to stay connected to those who mean the most to us. I’m reaching out today to let you know how we are doing in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are thankful for your understanding and support. It hardly seems possible that it was just a month ago that we cancelled the 2020 Grand Auction. We knew it was the right thing to do in spite of the fact that the event provides more than a third of our annual operating budget.

The outpouring of support we've seen since then, during this unprecedented time, has been incredible. Your messages and offers to help out have been comforting, inspiring, and very much appreciated. Our sponsors, partners, and annual attendees of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley (BGCCV) Grand Auction are among our strongest allies and most committed supporters. We are so grateful to all of those who have stepped forward with donations to help fill the gap. Anyone we may have not yet contacted who would like a refund should contact Jody Brazil at jbrazil@bgcofcv.org. In the meantime, our focus remains on service to local youth.

Grand Auction Chairperson Sandy Taylor and the team worked tirelessly to prepare for what we believe would have been a record-setting fundraiser. Unfortunately, due to the growing COVID-19 threat it was necessary to cancel the event. As a result, we still have a $300,000 shortfall in funds which we are looking to immediately shore up. To solve this gap, our Auction Committee and staff will be staging a “Virtual Auction” very soon.

Our new “Virtual Clubhouse” will feature a mobile app that provides club information and schedules and also allows us to communicate real-time with members and their families by text and email. This application will serve us well in the event of an emergency, when we need to distribute critical and timely information simultaneously to all members and families.

Scholarship opportunities. The annual scholarship application process in now underway, and we are actively encouraging and supporting members to complete applications.

We are monitoring the COVID-19 situation. The California governor order asking all residents to shelter at home is in effect through at least April 30, 2020. All BGCCV clubhouse locations remain closed until this date. However, we continue to work remotely to remain connected and provide resources to all who need it.

We will be here when this is all over! Like you, we are not sure what the full impact is going to be on the community, but we do know this – BGCCV will be needed more than ever before.

Our Response to COVID-19

Dear Friends,

During what are difficult and challenging times for all of us, please remember your health, safety, and well-being are what matter most. With schools and workplace closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our community is facing challenges unlike anything previously encountered. We are thinking about you and remain deeply appreciative that you are part of our Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley family.

Here is a brief update on how things are going.

  • Our four Boys & Girls Clubs (Coachella, Indio, La Quinta and Mecca) serve more than 6,000 kids and teens annually in our valley - we are working to develop new and innovative ways to connect and serve our kids and families engaged and focused on their school work, physical fitness and great futures.
  • Ideas include virtual and individual online and telephonic tutoring sessions, continuing academic program services with reduced sizes and sessions, expanded mobile food opportunities, video creation contests, and more. We will keep you posted about these things as they are available. If you have other ideas for ways to keep our kids and families connected, we are always interested in hearing more.
  • For those with access to internet, we will be sharing mobile tools used regularly by Club staff, including lots of fun and learning opportunities for children to engage in at home.
  • Additional resources will be made available to give families and caregivers access to additional resources to learn, create, play, and learn valuable skills during the time we are not able to be together in person.
  • With the exception of our school-based team members, Club staff is working. Some are engaged in ongoing deep cleaning of our facilities so that we’re fully ready when the time comes to re-open. Most of the Administrative staff is working remotely. We’re all committed to staying engaged with our colleagues and our Club kids and their families.

Local School District Closures and Meal Service Information

On Friday, March 13, Riverside County Public Health Officer Dr. Cameron Kaiser released an executive order directing Riverside County schools to close starting March 16 through April 3, 2020.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley Clubhouse Closures

Dear Friends:

In an effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus to protect our Club kids, employees and their families, Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley has closed the operation of our clubhouses in La Quinta, Indio, Coachella and Mecca until it is deemed safe to reopen.

We were notified late in the afternoon on Friday, March 13 that Riverside County Public Health Officer Dr. Cameron Kaiser has ordered the closure until April 3 of all Riverside County public schools, as well as preschools, charter schools, private schools and all colleges and universities in the county, to reduce the spread of the coronavirus. So after careful deliberation, and in an abundance of caution, we are following suit, closing all four of our clubhouses based on the same timing as the school closures.

We recognize this decision will affect many people. We will continue to monitor this evolving issue and stand ready to re-open as soon as we can. Your patience is appreciated as we make every effort to communicate effectively and efficiently. We will share additional information as soon as it becomes available.

Cancelation Notice

Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley Grand Auction Cancellation

In recognition of the developing coronavirus (COVID-19) public health issue, Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Grand Auction, scheduled for Saturday, March 14 at Hyatt Grand Champions in Indian Wells. We appreciate your understanding and support as we focus on taking care of ourselves and each other.

FAQ

How is it Coronavirus spread?

The virus is thought to be spread mainly from person-to-person, by coming into close contact with another person (within six feet) and through respiratory droplets. These droplets are produced when a person coughs or sneezes and lands in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

The virus can also spread by coming in contact with infected surfaces and objects. A person can get the virus by touching a surface or object which has the virus on it and then touching their own eyes, nose, or mouth.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. These symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus.

What’s the best way to prevent getting Coronavirus?

Currently, there is no vaccine to prevent Coronavirus disease. According to the CDC, the best way to prevent the disease is to avoid being in contact with the virus, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, and wash your hands afterward.
  • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects using a household disinfecting spray or wipe.

How long should I wash my hands?

You should wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Always wash your hands if they’re visibly dirty, including after eating, blowing your nose, coughing and sneezing. Try singing “Happy Birthday” while washing!

Should I wear a mask?

The CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19. Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others.

When will there be a vaccine for COVID-19?

Currently, no vaccine exists to prevent COVID-19. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to the virus.

When someone is sick with COVID-19, what symptoms do they have and what steps should they take for treatment? How long are they contagious?

Reported illnesses have ranged from mild symptoms to severe illness and death for confirmed COVID-19 cases. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure and include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. People who are mildly ill with COVID-19 are able to isolate at home during their illness. You should restrict activities outside your home, except for getting medical care. Do not go to work, school, or public areas. Avoid using public transportation, ridesharing, or taxis. For more information about the various steps to take when sick, individuals should visit the What to Do If You Are Sick With COVID-19 page on the CDC website.

I have heard some cleaning products claim they can kill coronavirus. Is that true? If so, which products should I use?

As this is a new virus and products have not been tested against this specific strain, standard cleaning products that kill other viruses will be presumptively fine against COVID-19.

Most commercially available household disinfectants are expected to be effective in disinfecting contaminated surfaces. Product label instructions must be followed. The strongest evidence so far indicates that COVID-19 is transmitted by respiratory droplets—coughs and sneezes—from infected individuals. It’s not yet clear how likely humans are to be infected by touching possible contaminated surfaces. It is not recommended at this time to do anything beyond routine cleaning in your household if no one is sick.
